Lithium carbonate has been widely applied not only in battery, glass, ceramics, chemicals, lubricants and pharmaceutical, etc industries, but also in synthetic rubber, dyes, semiconductor and most advanced industries. The global lithium carbonate market has an exceedingly high concentration degree. In 2008, SQM accounted for 30% market shares, Chemtall 28% and the USA-based FMC 19%. However, the accumulated share of Chinese manufacturers was only 22%. In 2009, the concentration degree of the industry improves further.

China salt lake brine lithium reserves rank 3rd in the world, and its lithium ore resources rank 4th. The rich lithium resources provide resources guarantee for the development of China lithium carbonate industry. Although the exploitation and utilization of lithium reserves started late in China and both of its lithium carbonate market scale and output are lower than those of the world’s top three manufacturers, its market development has huge potentials and it will be the major capacity releasing region of the globe in the future.

China’s lithium carbonate import growth has slowed down since 2005, and its import quantity’s absolute value has declined year by year. During Q1-Q3, 2009, China totally imported 1,805.6 tons of lithium carbonate, down 45.2% year on year, indicating that China’s lithium carbonate production has reached certain scale with less reliance on imports, and China started to export product in numbers to the overseas market.

During Q1-Q3 2009, China totally exported 1,417.5 tons of lithium carbonate, down 31.3% year on year, because, on the one hand, China started to restrict the export of resource products, and on the other hand, the domestic market has not gone out of downturn, and the demand is weak. China’s lithium carbonate export destinations are mainly Europe and Asia. From Q1 to Q3 of 2009, China’s lithium carbonate exports to Japan, Italy, the Netherlands and South Korea accounted for 66.52% of the total.

The report includes eight parts: overview of the lithium carbonate industry, global and China lithium carbonate market supply and demand pattern, China lithium carbonate import & export, product price trend, industry competition pattern as well as industry opportunities & risks. It also analyzes 14 key players such as SQM, FMC, CITIC Guoan, Tibet Mineral Development Co., Ltd, etc, describing their development in recent years (especially in 2009), lithium carbonate business development and updates in details. It tries to catch the developments of the industry and grasp the market future trends through the research of the lithium carbonate industry status quo.

Affected by the global financial crisis, the lead-zinc market in Euro-American countries takes slow recovery steps, but China’s lead-zinc market is better than expected. In 2009, China’s output of lead concentrate and lead ore still continued growth. In Jan.-Oct.2009, the total output of refined lead reached 3,159,400 tons, up 19.4% yr-on-yr; the output of lead ore amounted to 1,264,800 tons (in metal tons), up 13.5% yr-on-yr.

In Jan.-Oct.2009, the total output of refined zinc was 3,518,200 tons, up 5.8% yr-on-yr. However, the falling prices of zinc in global market at the beginning of 2009 caused fund pressure to be transferred to ore concentrate manufacturers, thus ore stoppage and production drop became the important issues for lead-zinc industry chain, and the output of zinc ore was down 7.7% yr-on-yr to be 2,437,900 tons (in metal tons).

The output increase of lead-zinc in China is attributed to the demand increase, and which becomes the attention focus of global lead-zinc market. The great rise of lead-zinc import in the second half year of 2009 also shows the strong demand for lead-zinc in Chinese market.

In the second half year of 2009, China’s non-ferrous metal market recovered slightly, and lead-zinc enterprises also rid themselves of global financial predicament gradually.

This report analyzes the development of China’s lead-zinc industry, market status quo, import & export, demand situation, lead-zinc downstream sectors, and key players, and probes into future development direction of China’ lead-zinc industry.

With the technological progress and market expansion, the production capacity and output of hydrofluoric acid have been growing rapidly. By the end of 2008, China’s actual annual production capacity of hydrofluoric acid hit more than one million tons. However, hydrofluoric acid, especially high-purity and high-performance products, is still in short supply, so China imports some every year.

In 2008, the total output of hydrofluoric acid increased greatly to 679,000 tons, an increase of more than 12.7% compared with 2007. In 2003, the output was 284,300 tons, so the output expanded by an annual increase of over 10% from 2003 to 2008.

Hydrofluoric acid is not only the most important basic material for fluorine chemical, but also the fluoride with the largest consumption. Besides, it is the major downstream processed product of fluorite. It is used in the manufacture of inorganic fluorine compounds, such as aluminum fluoride and crystal stone, the purification of molybdenum, rare earth and graphite as well as glass etching and metal cleaning; additionally, it is the main raw material of fluorine. In the aspect of organic compounds, hydrofluoric acid acts as the raw material of fluorine refrigerant and organic fluorine resin as well as the catalyst of alkylation and hydrocarbons, besides, it is utilized in the polymerization of alcohol and ethers, power polishing and eroded semiconductor silicon cleaning (mixed with HNO3).

China’s demand for hydrofluoric acid in 2003 was about 382,000 tons, and the figure in 2009 will be 917,000 tons. Growth in demand mainly arises from the demand of downstream application fields.

Glyphosate is the pesticide with the fastest growth rate, the most yield and export volume, growing at approximately 15% annually. Now, China’s current annual output of glyphosate reaches 300,000 tons, and the production capacity 600,000 tons.

Affected by international supply and demand, the market price of glyphosate in China has soared from RMB30, 000/ton since the beginning of 2007, but glyphosate has still been in short supply. Especially in 2008, the price was up to RMB100, 000/ton in March and April. The market demand in the second half of 2008 declined with the economic trends, glyphosate prices plummeted to RMB25,000/ton or less in 2009.

Glyphosate prices are currently incurred by a large number of glyphosate enterprises, which have offered different prices, so the market is in chaos. Now, a lot of companies have limited or even stopped their production. However, as a good kind of herbicide, glyphosate is unlikely to be substituted in quite a long time. After market reorganization, it is expected that a great number of glyphosate enterprises will cease production, and capacity utilization will drop further. The contradiction between supply and demand will be eased in 2010, and the price is expected to rebound then.
