China Ports Industry Report 2009

Overview:

According to economic data released by Ministry of Transport of the People’s Republic of China, National Bureau of Statistics of China and General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China, China’s economy has freed itself from the impact brought by global economic crisis, and showed a recovery, along which the operation of Chinese port industry turns better.

First, cargo throughput of ports continues to grow.

In Jan-Aug.2009, cargo throughput of ports (above designated scale) rose 4.9% to 4.49994 billion tons, in which coastal ports completed 3.10535 billion tons, up 4.8% from the same period last year; and the inland river ports swept 1.3946 billion tons, presenting a 5.2% year-on-year rise.

Second, passenger throughput continues to grow.

In Jan.-Aug., 2009, China ports with considerable scale witnessed passenger throughput of 70.58 million persons, increasing 12% from the same period last year, of which coastal ports swept 52.47 million persons, up 13.4%; inland river ports 11.11 million persons, up 2.6%.

Third, the throughput of merchandise for foreign trade made small grow margin.

In Jan.-Aug., 2009, China ports with considerable scale handled 1,403 million tons of merchandise for foreign trade, up 3.1% from the same period last year, of which 1,280.84 million tons were handled by coastal ports, up 2.4%; 122.16 million tons by inland river ports, up 12%.

Fourth, the drop of international container throughput further shrank.

In Jan.-Aug, 2009, the international container throughput of China ports with considerable scale amounted to 77.7225 million TEU, a 9% drop from the same period last year. Of which, coastal ports handled 70.7744 million TEU, down 8.8%; inland river ports 7.6481 million TEU, down11.3%.
