The average operating profit margin of the top 10 companies slightly declined to 23.2% in 2009 from the previous year’s margin of 23.3%. In contrast, the average net profit margin grew to record 26.3% in 2009 as compared with 20.2% in 2008.

Since 2005, the global pharmaceuticals market has witnessed moderate growth across different geographies. The market growth is expected to decelerate through to 2014 due to increased number of patent expiries and intensifying competition from generics.
