Overview:
The “World West Europe – Trends in Demand and Supply” is the Fifth compendium from YarnsandFibers covering the trends in global demand and supply of textile fibre/filament industry.
In this Report we have assesses the impact of the Global Slowdown on textile fi-bre/filament industry including natural fibres, particularly cotton, and how each country performed in this scenario. The analysis assesses the positions of fibres/filaments indus-try as events unfolded. The evolution of Global Slowdown and its spread across the world has been critically documented in perspective of textile industry. The demand crunch began in mid-2008 and continued into 2009. Also documented are the approaches of developed countries and the stimulus packages announced by various governments.
The Report is divided into two sections: Fibre-wise View and Region/Country wise View.
Summary
West Europe, consisting of major textile countries like Germany, Greece, Italy, Spain and France - accounted for 3.3% of global fibre/filament production and 4.4% in consumption. The region is a major producer of all types of fibre/filament. Its share in global acrylic production was 18% in 2008, while 17% of global viscose staple and filament was produced in West Europe. In nylon, West Europe accounts for 12% of global production while it accounts for 2% of world’s polyester production.
West Europe is a net importer of manmade fibres accounting for 13% of world trade. In 2008, it imported 1.68 million tons of manmade fibre/filament and 190,000 tons of cot-ton. It is also a major importer of cotton, consuming about 1.3% of global cotton crop. It was also a major exporter of acrylic, nylon and viscose staple fibre. In 2008, it accounted for 27% of global nylon export, 20% of acrylic and 10% of viscose staple fibre. In case of polyester, filament exports accounted for 11% of global trade.
