Overview:
The “World Fibre & USA – Trends in Demand and Supply” is the Fifth compendium from YarnsandFi-bers covering the trends in global demand and supply of textile fibre/filament industry.
In this Report we have assesses the impact of the Global Slowdown on textile fibre/filament industry including natural fibres, particularly cotton, and how each country performed in this scenario. The analysis assesses the positions of fibres/filaments industry as events unfolded. The evolution of Global Slowdown and its spread across the world has been critically documented in perspective of textile in-dustry. The demand crunch began in mid-2008 and continued into 2009. Also documented are the approaches of developed countries and the stimulus packages announced by various governments.
The Report is divided into two sections: Fibre-wise View and Region/Country wise View.
Summary
USA was world’s third largest producer of fibres/filaments in 2008 with production at 4.60 million tons. This accounted for 7.4% of total production. It was fourth largest supplier of cotton and third largest in manmade fibres/filaments. In exports, it ranked first in the world with volumes at 3.30 million tons in 2008. It was also the fourth largest importer of fibre/ filaments during the year. While USA produces all types of fibres/filament, its mainstay has been cotton and nylon where it has a major share in world supply. Polyester too is large but has a smaller share. It no longer produces viscose fibre/filament and acrylic staple fibre.
Both manmade fibre/filament and cotton production in USA has declining rapidly over the years. Dur-ing the 1990s, production of manmade fibre/filament increased at the rate 0.4% per annum while cot-ton output grew at 1% per annum. However, the decade of 2000, production of manmade textile started declining faster than ever, recording a fall of 5.1% per annum during the period 2000-07. Meanwhile cotton production increased at a faster rate 1.6% per annum despite acreage shrinking 3% a year. The gain here was tremendous in the yield rate (output per hectare). In 2008, with the global economies in the grip of financial crisis arising in USA, demand for textiles shrank significantly. Many textile companies were shut in USA and others had to cut operations to remain in business. Production of manmade fibres declined 17% in USA during the year and cotton output was reduced by one-thirds.
USA produced 1.80 million tons of manmade fibres/filament comprising nylon (741,000 tons), po-lyester filament (415,000 tons) and polyester staple (646,000 tons). In global perspective, it accounts for about 21% of World’s nylon production, 2% in polyester filament and 5.4% in polyester fibre. Cot-ton production was at 2.79 million tons accounting for 12% of global output during the year.
